چکیده

We consider geometric biomembranes governed by an L-gradient flow for bending energy subject to area and volume constraints (Helfrich model). We give a concise derivation of a novel vector formulation, based on shape differential calculus, and corresponding discretization via parametric FEM using quadratic isoparametric elements and a semi-implicit Euler method. We document the performance of the new parametric FEM with a number of simulations leading to dumbbell, red blood cell and toroidal equilibrium shapes while exhibiting large deformations.

Finite element methods for director fields on flexible surfaces

We introduce a nonlinear model for the evolution of biomembranes driven by the L2-gradient flow of a novel elasticity functional describing the interaction of a director field on a membrane with its curvature. In the linearized setting of a graph we present a practical finite element method (FEM), and prove a priori estimates. We derive the relaxation dynamics for the nonlinear model on closed ...

A modeling methodology for finite element mesh generation of multi-region models with parametric surfaces

This paper presents a description of the reorganization of a geometric modeler, MG, designed to support new capabilities of a topological module (CGC) that allows the detection of closed-off solid regions described by surface patches in non-manifold geometric models defined by NURBS. These patches are interactively created by the user by means of the modeler’s graphics interface, and may result...

Optimization of Freeform Building Shape Using Genetic Algorithm

This paper proposes an optimization algorithm for envelope design during an early stage freeform building design. This study performs geometric modeling using a three-dimensional (3D) design tool called Rhino, which designs examples of freeform buildings with a parametric design method, i.e., a 3D design technique for freeform building design. This method proceeds by mesh generation for the fre...

Finite element modeling of non-rigid origami

Origami has become a source of inspiration in engineering for structural design and the creation of mechanical metamaterials. In the often used analytic geometric and energy methods, it is difficult to incorporate deformation of the faces in non-rigid origami. However, deformation of the faces can play a significant role in their mechanical behaviour. This thesis aims to investigate and improve...

Geometric Nonlinearity: Is it Important for Real-time FEM Surgical Simulation?

1. Background/Problem In real-time surgery simulation and planning, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is often used to simulate small and large deformation of human tissue for applications such as laparoscopy training [4], needle insertion planning [1], and image registration [2]. In using FEM, assumptions must be made about material properties and the scale of deformation of human tissues in and...
